After years of living and recording in the Amazon region of Brazil, composer and sound designer Antonio Teoli has partnered with Splice for a unique and experimental new library, Dark Spirits: Amazon Rhythms. Known for his impressive sound library The Amazonic, which is home to a treasure trove of instruments from the jungle, Teoli takes this project even deeper into the distinctive sounds of the Amazon, this time focusing on sounds that evoke mysterious, dark, and intriguing atmospheres.
Many of these instruments in this pack naturally produce sounds that are ready-made for cinematic productions. Instruments like the ZogZog, Chorona, and Tambor Celeste possess an eerie, otherworldly quality. Meanwhile, percussion instruments such as the Tracajá, Alfaia, and Bumbo Leguero invoke a deeply resonant heartbeat. When you explore the processed versions, which were created using a mix of pedals, synthesizers, and plugins, you’ll experience an amplified, darker, and more otherworldly soundscape. Each recording session was a genuine performance, with real-time manipulation of effects and twisting a lot of knobs, resulting in truly unique sounds.
The large majority of these sounds were played by masters João Paulo and Celdo Braga, who not only performed for the pack but created many of these incredible instruments by hand. Natives of the Amazon, their inspiration transcends traditional instruments, extending to creations that replicate the sounds they grew up hearing in the forest – even using them to communicate with birds!
