In 2018, years before terms like “digicore” were coined, they cofounded the collective Novagang, a group that would go on to repeatedly redefine the bounds of underground rap and jumpstart artists like xaviersobased and quinn. Listen to any Novagang upload and you’ll find ideas that years later became mainstream trends. prblm has since worked with Fakemink, Ways, feardorian, midwxst, kuru, Surf Gang…, released solo music and genre-crossing side projects like DJ YZMA, as well as wave-making drumkits. Their “HD 808” (which you may know as the “Tiktok 808”) has become inescapable on the FYP and across modern music.
In their first official kit for Splice, ‘SUPERNOVA,’ prblm reflects on Novagang roots while expanding the palette for the next big boom. prblm draws from house, Brazilian Funk, Afrobeat, new jack swing and trap to create a pack as versatile as it is eclectic. Sweet, playful melodies contrast the most evil Serum growls and blown-out Brazil-inspired grooves. “The drums are my favorite part,” prblm tell us over Discord. “A lot of it is foley, Serum, and various manipulated instruments.” The FX mostly consist of the pack’s own drums rattled by screeching high-feedback delays, which reminds us of the long history of prblm’s sounds echoing through the halls of the scene to take on lives of their own.
