Moment re:grow, a Tennyson moment
Born Luke Pretty in Edmonton, Canada, Tennyson is a formative figure in the history of internet music, among the first spring of Soundcloud stars with his first upload in 2011. The early productions were an eclectic melange of future bass and the virtuosic jazz he grew up playing. Joined by his younger sister Tess on drums, they performed his technical yet playful productions live, making the siblings quick darlings of the experimental electronic world. Releasing with Ryan Hemsworth’s Secret Songs, Skrillex’s OWSLA, and Ninja Tune imprint Counter Records, Luke’s music continues to evolve in every pot it’s planted in. Following a move to Tokyo in 2023, and collaborations with Japanese artists lilbesh ramko, peterparker69, and PASTASTA, he released his album ‘aka’, marking a shift in sonic influence and perspective. ‘re:grow’ is the fruit of Luke’s time in Japan, and heavily inspired by Tokyo hyperpop, dance music, and botanica. For as idiosyncratic as we hold him, he tells us he feels like he’s always trying to imitate a sound that he’s years behind. Through the cycle of seasons, we feel like he’s just reaping what he sowed years ago: the sounds he thinks he’s chasing couldn’t have existed first without his influence. These sweet melodies, atmospheric music beds, and textured percussion are seeds planted in hopes for future blooms, continuing to honor the push and the pull.”These recordings traveled 4,140.4 km on the Yamanote Line after you blurred away. I guess we only let it re:grow, so it can die again. So we can see each other the next time… just like the first time. By the way, the lime green water in Mizumoto Park is NOT radioactive!”
